One day in 1819, 3,000 miles off the coast of Chile, in one of the most remote regions of the Pacific Ocean, 20 American sailors watched their ship flood with seawater.

They'd been struck by a sperm whale, which had ripped a catastrophic hole in the ship's hull. As their ship began to sink beneath the swells, the men huddled together in three small whaleboats.

These men were 10,000 miles from home, more than 1,000 miles from the nearest scrap of land. In their small boats, they carried only rudimentary navigational equipment and limited supplies of food and water.

These were the men of the whaleship Essex, whose story would later inspire parts of “Moby Dick.”

Even in today's world, their situation would be really dire, but think about how much worse it would have been then.

No one on land had any idea that anything had gone wrong. No search party was coming to look for these men. So most of us have never experienced a situation as frightening as the one in which these sailors found themselves, but we all know what it's like to be afraid.

We know how fear feels, but I'm not sure we spend enough time thinking about what our fears mean.

As we grow up, we're often encouraged to think of fear as a weakness, just another childish thing to discard like baby teeth or roller skates.

And I think it's no accident that we think this way. Neuroscientists have actually shown that human beings are hard'wired to be optimists.

So maybe that's why we think of fear, sometimes, as a danger in and of itself. “Don't worry,” we like to say to one another. “Don't panic.” In English, fear is something we conquer. It's something we fight.

It's something we overcome. But what if we looked at fear in a fresh way? What if we thought of fear as an amazing act of the imagination, something that can be as profound and insightful as storytelling itself?

most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve

this goal. what is the secret to popularity? in fact, it is very simple. the first

step is to improve our appearance. we should always make sure that we stay in good

shape and dress well. when we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look

better but also feel better. in addition, we should smile and appear friendly. after

all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance. if we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and

  impressed by our confidence.

  I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.

However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

  feeling of youth

no young man believes he shall ever die. it was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. there is a feeling of eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. to be young is to be as one of the immortal gods. one half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countletreasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. we make the coming age our own-

the vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.

death. old age. are words without a meaning. that paby us like the idea air which we regard not. others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. as in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward-

bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!

and see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. we look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseleprogress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. it is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedneof our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. as infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects prearound us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

whatever we have undergone in our life, we shouldn't complain about it. wemay get a lot or lose so much in our life journey, but keeping a positiveattitude should always be together with us.

nothing can defeat us if we are confident and diligent. just as sayinggoes, god is equal to everyone. as he closes the door, he will also open awindow for us.

  being enthusiastic

even though we're poor in knowledge, our thinking is infinite. maybe wewill make some great achievements because of our enthusiasm. whether we'reexperienced or not, it doesn't matter. enthusiasm will take us further anddeeper.

please remember, everyone is so talented, and no one is born stupid. sincethere's an old saying, “through a sand, we can see a world. in a flower, we canfind a heaven."

One night a hotel caught fire, and the people who were staying in it ran out in their night clothes.

Two men stood outside and looked at the fire.

“Before I came out,” said one,“I ran into some of the rooms and found a lot of money. People don't think of money when they're afraid. When anyone leaves paper money in a fire, the fire burns it. So I took all the bills that I could find.No one will be poorer because I took them.”

“You don't know my work,” said the other.

  “What is your work?”

  “I'm a policeman.

“Oh!” cried the first man. He thought quickly and said,“And do you know my work?”“No,”said the policeman.

“I'm a writer. I'm always telling stories about things that never happened.”

Believe me,I can do it。

my tea is gone cold i’m wondering why i got out of bad at all. the morningrain clouds up my window and i can’t see at all.

and even if i could it’ll all be gray, but your picture on my wall, itremains me that is not so bad.

i’m sure that there are many people in this world are very easily affectedby weather or surrounding environments.this kind of people is every emotional, they maybe meet occasionally ineffable sadness, even cannot tell a reason.

i think of a few solutions to this problem.

first of all, when you find out that you are not in the mood to do anythingbut feeling sad, the first thing you have to do is keep yourself busy.listeninga cheerful song would be helpful, at the same time, find something else to do,like cleaning the house, go out for a jogging.

just put yourself in a cheerful and bright environment, nurture someflowers in your room, or keep a pet, the vibrant plants or animal is always akey to open a happy door.

second, think in a positive way. many people are tending to think theproblem in a bad way, but in fact, things are not always as bad as theythink.

it is been proved that if people think in the bad side, they are unlikelyfind the way to solute the problem and feel worse.

we should see the bright side while we are in the bad situation, which makeus ensure everything is possible, and everything will get better. then our moodwill not be effected by the predicament。

in a world, to be a positive person is not that difficult, since we canmaster our mind, we should choose a positive over passive. then life will bebetter.

recently, i have seen an impressive film –precious, which tells the growingexperiences about a pretty fat black girl, precious jones, a girl living in theharlem.

the film reveals the poor and miserable life in the harlem, but at the sametime, it encourages people to take a positive and optimistic attitude to faceit, no matter how difficult it is.

precious is so undereducated that she can not read and write formally.what’s worse, she is usually knocked around by her irascible mother.

worst of all, she is sexually assaulted by her stepfather and has twochildren before the age of seventeen. owing to the situation she gets involved, she has to leave school and is introduced to alternative school.

after waging many struggles and overcoming many difficulties, she finds thegoals of life again with the help of her teacher and classmates.

in the film, precious insists on keeping her children all the time thoughshe gets involved in trouble.

she has a firm belief that she can get rid of the past life and start thenew one and she really makes it finally. her insistence tells me that keepingpositive and optimistic would make a great contribution to achieve dream.

in life, many people are easy to feel frustrated by meeting a bit ofsetback. as far as i am concerned, we need to learn to keep positive andoptimistic when facing difficulties so that we have more power to keep andpursue our dreams.

as you slowly open your eyes, look around, notice where the light comes into your room; listen carefully, see if there are new sounds you can recognize; feel with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in the air.

yes, yes, yes, its a new day, its a different day, and its a bright day! and most importantly, its a new beginning for your life, a beginning where you are going to make new decisions, take new actions, make new friends, and take your life to a totally unprecedented level.

in your mind’s eye, you can see clearly the things you want to have, the paces you intend to go, the relationships you desire to develop, and the positions you aspire to reach.

you can hear your laughters of joy and happiness on the day when everything happens as you dream. you can see the smiles on the people around you when the magic moment strikes. you can feel your face is getting red, your heart is beating fast, and your blood is rushing all over your body, to every single corner of your being!

you know all this is real as long as you are confident, passionate and committed! and you are confident, you are passionate, you are committed!

you will no longer fear making new sounds, showing new facial expressions, using your body in new ways, approaching new people, and asking new questions.

you will live every single day of your life with absolute passion, and you will show your passion through the words you speak and the actions you take.

you will focus all your time and effort on the most important goals of your life. you will never succumb to challenges of hardships.

you will never waver in your pursuit of excellence. after all, you are the best, and you deserve the best!

as your coach and friend, i can assure you the door to all the best things in the world will open to you, but the key to that door is in your hand. you must do your part. you must faithfully follow the plans you make and take the actions you plan; you must never quit and you must never fear. i know you must do it, you can do it, you will do it, and you will succeed! now stand firm and tall, make a fist, get excited, and yell it out:

i must do it! i can do it! i will do it! i will succeed! i must do it! i can do it! i will do it! i will succeed! i must do it! i can do it! i will do it! i will succeed!

ladies and gentlemen , good afternoon! im very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. i hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.

first i want to ask you some questions: 1、 do you know what is youth? 2、 how do you master your youth? youth

youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often existsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals.

years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of whats next and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart theres a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

  thank you!
