Teaching Procedures:

Step I. Greeting

T: Hello, boys and girls.

Ss: Hello, teacher.

T: Sit down, please. How are you feeling today, Li Ming?

S1: I' m feeling much better

T: I' m glad to hear that. You must take care of yourself. It's

getting cold. You' d better wear more clothes

S1: Thank you.

Step II. Revision

1. Revise the ways to express purpose.

T: Why do we water young trees?

S2: To make them grow. (Bb)

S3: In order to make them grow. (Bb)

S4: So that they can grow. (Bb)

T: Very good. That is, we can express purpose in three ways. First,

we can use the phrase " in order to “, Third, we can use the clause

introduced by " so that “, Now look at the sentences on the screen.

1. He stood in the front of the classroom so that he might see the

blackboard clearly -------

He stood in the front of the classroom to / in order to see the

blackboard clearly.

2. He went to the hall early so that he might get a good seat.

-------------

He went to the hall early to / in order to get a good seat.

3. She has bought the book so that she can follow the TV Lesson.

-------

She has bought that book to / in order to follow the TV Lesson.

T: Can you see something in common in these sentences? Pay attention

to the subjects of the principal clause and the adverbial clause.

S5: They are the same person in each sentence.

T: Yes. When the subject of the principal clause is the same as the

subject of the adverbial clause, we can change the complex sentences

into a simple one, using " to do " or " in order to “ Are you clear?

Ss: Yes ,

T: Now, look at the table in Lesson 19, Part 1. Please make

sentences with the phrases given in the table, I'll give you two

minutes to prepare for, it, then I'll ask some of you to give your

answers.

Suggested answers:

1. People had to walk a long way in order to fetch firewood.

2. They plant trees in order to keep the soil on the hills

3. Meetings are hold in order to explain the plan.

4. The women water the trees so that they will grow well.

5. The cows are kept away from the trees so that they don' t knock

them down.

Step III. Revision

1. Revise the use of the Passive Voice, Show a picture on the

screen.

T: What are the village people doing?

Ss: They are planting trees.

T: Yes, They plant trees on the hill every year, That is, trees are

planted on the hill every year. OK?

(Bb: They plant trees on the hill every year.

Trees are planted on the hill every year, be + past participle)

T: Now go through Lesson 18 once again quickly to find all the

passive Verbs. (Collect their answers orally.)

Suggested answers:

1. A few of them can be cut each year for firewood.

2. The rest are left to grow even taller

3. Trees were cut but none were planted

4. When it rained, the soil was carried away down the hills and into

the rivers.

5. Meetings are held in order to explain the programme to the

villagers.

6. It is operated by the women of the area.

7. These small trees are given to the villagers and they are free.

2. Wb, Lesson 18. Ex .2. Check the answers by showing them in the

sentences on the screen. Before that, some students are required to

give their answers orally to the class.

Step IV. Practice

T: Now deal with Part .2 Look at the example: Cabbages are usually

planted in spring or summer. Who plant them? I do, That is: I

usually plant cabbages in spring or summer. Please pay attention to

the predicate verb in this sentence. The Present. Indefinite is used

here. OK?

(Bb: am / is / are + p.p)

Ss: Yes,

T: Now, you can work in pairs; Turn these sentences from the Passive

Voice into the Active Voice.

Suggested answers:

1. I put some soil in the box.

2. I sow the seeds carefully.

3. I keep the box in the shade.

4. Later I put the young plants in the earth.

5. I water them every day.

6. Finally I plant them in the field.

Step V. Practice

SB. Lesson 19 Part 3

T: what the village people of Tangsa did in the past? And what is

done now? The following sentences will tell you, but you should

change these sentences from the Active Voice into the Passive Voice.

Look at the example: They did not grow trees in the past. We can

say: Trees were not grown in the past. Pay attention to the verb

form, Past Indefinite is used here. OK?

Ss: Yes

(Bb: was / were + P.P.)

T: Now, work in pairs; Turn these sentences from the Active Voice

into the Passive Voice.

(Ask some students to write the answers to the three sentences on

the Bb. Tell the class that the object complement is called the

subject complement in the Passive Voice. In the eighth sentence,

tell the Ss that the Attributive Clause should always follow the

word that it modifies. For the other sentences, the Ss are required

to do them orally in class.)

Suggested answers:

1. Many trees were cut down in the past.

2. Thousands of trees were planted every year

3. A few of them can be cut for firewood

4. The rest are left to grow taller

5. Meetings are held to talk about the tree-planting programme.

6. Young trees can' t be cut down.

7. The rules cannot be broken.

8. Anybody who cuts down young trees is punished.

9. More than 1.2 million trees were planted between 1975 and 1980.

10. In this way the soil is not washed away. (While changing

Sentences 6 and 7. remind the Ss of the structure of the Passive

Voice with a modal verb.)

(Bb: can / may / must --- be + P.P.)

(Teacher explains the Chinese for the phrase " wash away " and give

an example to the Ss.)

e. g. The bridge was washed away in the terrible flood.

Step VI. Workbook

1. Wb, Lesson 19 Ex. 1.

(Give the Ss some minutes to prepare for this exercise, and then ask

some Ss to write their answers on the Bb, Finally check the answers

with the whole class.

Suggested answers:

1. In the United States, rice is grown in the South and wheat is

grown in the north

Mixed tenses and voices are used in this exercise. Before doing it,

make sure that Ss understand the meaning of the sentences. Then let

the Ss do the exercise by themselves. Finally check the answers with

the class.

Step VII. Sum up

Go over the important language points in this unit with the Ss. A

slide card can be shown on the screen to help the Ss remember the

ways to express purpose and the structure of the Passive Voice.

Step VIII. Homework.

1. Wb, Lesson 19. Ex. 2. The Ss are required to write this exercise

on their exercise books. Suggested answers:

Mary' s parents invited some friends to their home one night. They

allowed Mary to stay up late. They asked her to take care of the

guests ' hats and coats.

As soon as the first guest rang the bell, the little girl ran to her

room. She took out a box and put a dollar in it, She placed the box

near the door. When the guests saw the money. they put a quarter

into the box. At the end of the party, Mary found ten dollars in the

box.
