Teaching Procedures :

Step I. Greeting

Greet the whole class as usual .

Step II. Revision and Lead-in

(Teacher asks two Ss to talk about their summer holidays to check

their homework .After that

teacher can say the following.)

T: Very good . Thank you for your performance. Just now we know

their life in the summer holidays

was very rich and colorful . Today we′re going to learn a letter

from Charlie . Charlie lives in

America . Let′s see how American students spend their summer

holidays . Before we learn the text ,

We should learn some new words.

Step III. Preparation for reading

1.Show the new words in this Lesson on the screen , then give brief

introduction to the students and then let Ss

read the new words after the tape .

T: Now listen to me carefully .Iwant to ask you two simple questions

What do we call the time when the farmers collect the crops in the

fields?

SA: Harvest.

T: What do we call the machine that farmers use in the fields?

SB: Tractor.

Step IV . Reading

1. (Ask the Ss to read the letter as quickly as possible and try

to find the answer to the questions on the screen.

1.. What does Charlie talk about in his letter?

2. What ′s the difference between his home time area and

ours?

T: OK. Now open your books , please . I give you three minutes to

read the letter fast . Try to get the answers .

SA: Charlie talked about in his letter working on the farm , a party

at harvest time and the time areas of the states.

SB: There are five different time areas in the States . In Charlie's

state the time is fourteen hours behind Beijing time .

2. Let the Ss read the letter again , then answer some detailed

questions in the letter. Show the questionnaire on the screen , ask

them to read and discuss in pairs or groups to complete the task.

A Questionnaire

1. Is Charlie a city child or a country boy ?

2. Where does he write to Xinaojun?

3. He is the only child in the family , isn't he ?

4. What do Charlie and his family grow on the farm and

around their house ?

5. What do they usually do at weekends?

6. How many time areas are there in the States and how many

in China?

Answers:

1. I think /guess he is a country boy /child.

2. He writes the letter in the country /on a farm in America.

3. No , he isn't .He has a brother.

4. They grow rice on the farm and vegetables in their garden.

5. They usually hold parties and cook meat on an open fire

outside . And some of the young men drink beer together.

6. There are five time areas in the States and , in China ,

there are also five.

3. Check the answers with the whole class . And then deal with the

language points below shown on the screen .

go on to do sth .=begin to do sth .else

eg .He went on studying till 11 o'clock . After finishing her

homework , she went on to preview the next lessons.

2. We grow rice in the south of the States ,but in the north where

it is colder they grow wheat .

" where it is colder "is an attributive clause to modify the north ,

So the sentence can be regarded as the following sentence:

------but it is colder in the north so people grow wheat .

He had Tom paint the fence all by himself.

He had the fence painted (by Tom ).

Step V Listening and consolidation

Play the tape and let the Ss listen to the letter carefully and try

to remember something ,and then complete the article by filling in

each blank with one word .Show it on the screen .

Charlie is now on the farm for the summer vacation. _____is the
